After starting his construction firm Darrell discovered that engineering school does not
teach much about business and finance. He signed up for a one-day program called The
Accounting Game,™ created by entrepreneur, Marshall Thurber, and developed by
educator, Nancy Maresh. Fascinated by teaching using experiential learning methods,
Darrell ended his construction career and became master trainer for this program.
Darrell discovered the need for better communication while teaching others to present
this financial program. He found that there is often a significant gap between what a
person believes he/she has communicated and what has actually been heard or
experienced by the audience. The skills and tools of accountable communication were
developed so that people can communicate congruently and deal with the very human
issues that arise in challenging situations—self-confidence and self esteem, strong
emotions, biases, confusion, and trust.
It turned out that managers need the same skills and abilities as good teachers to lead
their teams effectively. Darrell has spent over 20 years teaching these two topics—
financial literacy and accountable communication to business groups in North and South
America, Europe, and Asia. His clients have included Fidelity Investments, Herman
Miller, ABB, Wachovia, and Turner Broadcasting.
Darrell’s dream is to use his two disciplines to help companies create large numbers of
‘big picture strategic thinkers’ who can sustain growth and innovation throughout an
organization.
Darrell currently lives with his wife and family in Boulder, Colorado. |
