The Learning Process

Our learning has a repetitive pattern

1. Engage
2. Create Common Ground
3. Provide an Experience
4. Debrief the Experience
5. Commit to New day-to-day Actions and Behaviors

This pattern continually raises the gradient of knowledge and actions that can be learned and tolerated by students.

Engagement is the process by which a person chooses (from the inside) to join in a particular activity or pursuit. Engagement is created by questions, discussion, games, laughter, etc. but always emerges from recognition that true participation is always a choice.

Common ground can be conceptual, physical or emotional. Its purpose is to help people release anxiety and fear by recognizing that no one is alone. People have common thoughts, fears, needs and desires and the recognition of these brings safety and connection and readiness to learn.

Gradient refers to the level of intensity of an experience or the emotional risk required to participate in any situation. Learning to divide, for example, is a higher gradient activity
than learning to add. It can be said that learning to divide requires more engagement and
common ground for the learner than learning to add. Giving feedback to your boss is a
higher gradient activity than giving the same feedback to a peer or report. (See graphic)
